I have worked in nursing homes for over 20 years and just last summer was promoted to unit coordinator of a 55 bed dementia/alzheimers wing. Im being allowed to develop the care guidelines for the residents following what we call the Gentle Care Program. Im starting a class this month in this approach given by Moya Jones and hope to glean ideas from her. We are putting people from each department in this class in hopes we will be able to come back and teach the rest. Your page is helpful in understanding from the families veiwpoint what they are going through. My own father was also diagnosed with Alzheimers last summer so your resourses are valuble to me as he lives in Florida and Im in Washington. Thank you for your input and the beautiful pictures of your mom. She raised a wonderful daughter and what a beautiful tribute you are to her. Thank You Debra |

My mother and father are still living at the age of 80"s, and I've been blessed that they have their heath, so I really can't say anything from experience. Only that this is not a far world, and the Bible does bring out a fact that it rains on the just and the unjust alike. And since we don't really know what the next day holds for anybody, we can only live for each day that we have. Don't look back, and remember your mother as she would have you to remember her. And who knows, one day you will probably be able to share with someone that "this day will pass" also. Jim |

Name: Sharon Ward Website: Bar W Homepage Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Southwest of Fort Worth, Texas Time: 1997-02-09 01:51:00 Comments: I am sitting here in tears after reliving your time with your mother with you. I had my mother with me in my home for a year and a half, and so many of the problems were the same. Some were far worse. If you think guests or a visit are upsetting for an alzheimers patient, try an involuntary move. I have seen her offer perfect strangers large sums of money to take her home. We live on a ranch, and I have also seen her with her purse on her arm, heading across the prairie. I had to watch her 24 hours a day, and got proficient at shopping during her regular sleep periods. Mother is now in a special care center for dementia patients in Fort Worth. It is a wonderful place, and she has excellent care. I had to move her out of my home, because she was affecting my family to such a tremendous extent. I could not have my daughter remembering her grandmother with contempt and resentment. I searched for a very long time, before finding a place that I felt would give her the special care that she deserved. Then cried all the way home the day I left her there. Mother no longer remembers me now, but always seems pleased to see me. My daughter always wants to go and visit when I go, also. These things are what get me through the feeling that I have deserted Mother. Thank you for sharing your story. |

Name: Mary Jane Miller Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Denver, CO Time: 1997-01-29 09:26:00 Comments: Brenda: I just came across your page on Monday while looking for some poetry about mothers. I lost my mom to Alzheimers and Parkinson a year ago February 12--She was buried on the 15th of that month. We are going to have a family memorial the 15th of Feb. this year. My dad was her major caregiver, but two of my sisters--one who lives in their home town in Eastern Colorado, and one who lives here in Denver near me also helped. We have three other sisters--one is in Pennsylvania; two are here in Denver; the two in Denver never really accepted how sick Mama was. Although it's been a year, I still have a lot of grief and trouble dealing with the fact that she is gone. Like you said in your journals, she didn't always know who we were and called us by names of people from her past. We had t put her in a nursing home in August 1995 and I only got to see her four times after that, but she never responded to me--it was like she didn't even see me. She had a seizure in Jan 1996 and we thought she was going to die then. I got real luckly that night, she called me by name but I don't know if she really knew it was me or just happened to say the right name. This is a really terrible disease--it is so disheartening to watch someone you love lose their grip on reality and not be able to do the things at which they were so proficient. Your page is beautiful and I will visit it often. I hope to read the rest of your journals when you get them done. |

I have not had a chance to explore it fully yet, but I am looking forward to it. I am the primary caretaker for my wife's mother. She has been living with us for over 8 years since her heart bypass. She is 74 years old and had been doing pretty good until recently For the last couple of years, she would just put things away in the wrong places i.e. like unloading the dishwasher. She would drive us nuts trying to things. Now it seems over the last few months she is really going down fast. Her short term memory is really poor. She wants to go home and she will ask what's the day and date consistently. What I am wondering, is this rapid deterioration normal and what other changes can I expect. Brenda, thanks alot for your ear-tony |
