1. Analyze the situation:
What time did the aggression occur?
Where did it occur?
What was happening around the aggressor at the time?
What was the victim doing prior to the incident?
Describe the aggressive behavior
What was the response of the caregiver to the aggressor?
2. Engage the following interventions:
Increase orienting cues, build familiarization and consistency
Use night lights
Encourage sleep at night
Reduce elements of frustration
Consider time out
3. Behaviors to avoid:
Confrontations
Raises voices
Physical contact
Crowding
Showing fear
Speed
4. Management techniques:
Stay calm
Respect patient's personal space
Encourage patient to talk
Listen
Provide alternative to behavior
Distract
